[with commentary, back by popular demand]
1. The TREE Of LIFE - visually stunning and thought provoking
2. PJ20 - a time machine to the early 90’s
3. DRIVE - style, mood, violence...and a cool soundtrack
4. The TRIP - travel, food, comedy, poetry, impressions - what more could you want?
5. MIDNIGHT In PARIS - a location and premise that suits the Woody Allen style
6. MONEYBALL - a drama in which Jonah Hill keeps pace with Brad Pitt and Philip Seymour Hoffman
7. YOUNG ADULT - a dark character study along the lines of Big Fan and Observe & Report
8. IDES Of MARCH - finally an intense political thriller with twists (zing?)
9. HORRIBLE BOSSES - a solid entry into the R-rated comedy sweepstakes of recent years
10. 30 For 30 - these excellent ESPN documentaries deserve a spot on the list, especially entries such as: The Fab Five and Catching Hell.
*HONORABLE MENTION:
*CRAZY STUPID LOVE - standard romantic comedy fare with the seemingly ever-present Gosling and Stone
*The ADJUSTMENT BUREAU - some interesting ideas, but magic hats may not be the best of them
*HALL PASS - some classic Farrelly brothers moments
*EXPORTING RAYMOND - interesting document of the process in translating an American sitcom to a Russian audience
*DISHONORABLE MENTION:
*YOUR HIGHNESS - considering the talent involved, a huge waste of potential
*BRIDESMAIDS - overrated
*THE CHANGE UP - change up your decision to watch this before it is too late (meaning it is not good...due to an advertising mix up I saw it for free, but still feel ripped off)
*The DILEMMA - the real dilemma is how movies this bad are produced...one of the worst ever
