Another light year on the concert calendar, with just four shows to cover:
*3.22.12: Brit Floyd @ The Landmark Theater (Syracuse)
Having seen the David Gilmour-led Pink Floyd in 1994 and Roger Waters tour the albums Dark Side of the Moon (2007) and The Wall (2010), I assumed seeing a Pink Floyd tribute band would be less than necessary. I was convinced to attend, however, and the show did not disappoint. They had the Pink Floyd sound down, as expected, but they also recreated an impressive approximation of the visual aspects of the Pink Floyd concert spectacle. Audiences may no longer be able to see the original Pink Floyd, but this is not a bad substitute. The show spanned the band’s history from the early years (See Emily Play) to lesser known gems (The Fletcher Memorial Home) and of course hit all the classic rock staples (including a run through side two of The Wall from Hey You to Comfortably Numb).
*6.8.12: Lindsey Buckingham @ The State Theater (Ithaca)
This was one of the shortest headlining shows I have ever attended (just over an hour), but certainly the brevity did not diminish the performance. Buckingham is an impressive guitar player and an emotive front man. He sprinkled some of his Fleetwood Mac classics amid numbers from his solo catalog in an efficient but impressive show. Highlights included Big Love, Never Going Back Again, Go Your Own Way, and Trouble.
*7.28.12: WILCO @ Ommegang Brewery (Cooperstown)
Seeing Wilco outside in the summer has become a tradition of sorts in the last decade. If memory serves, rain only cut one short (Lowell, MA, in 2009). This one started with rain, but eventually the weather improved and seemed to inspire the band to reward their wet and loyal fans with a long set. One of my favorite type of Wilco sets is a steady building of momentum that culminates with a series of their classic rockers in the encore (I Got You and Outtasite (Outta Mind) closed out the second encore). This was one of those shows. The show also highlighted tracks from the band’s latest offering, The Whole Love, such as Dawned On Me, Born Alone, Whole Love, and Art Of Almost. The 19th Wilco show I have attended was also the closest to home base, as they played at the Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, a nice spot for outdoor summer shows.
*10.6.12: Great Lake Swimmers @ The Haunt (Ithaca)
Whenever I introduce someone to the Great Lake Swimmers they inevitably ask why the band is not more popular. I don’t really have an answer to that, but I am glad that they have played in Ithaca twice in the last few years. This show at The Haunt allowed for an intimate showcase of the band’s latest album, New Wild Everywhere, and some standout tracks from their back catalog. A highlight was when the band came down to the floor and played a totally acoustic encore (Still) with the crowd circled around them.
That's it for 2012 shows. The 2013 calendar is currently clear, but any shows will be added as they appear.
